Sukhothai literally translates to "the dawn of happiness" and was the first capital of Siam established some 800 years ago - the remnants of which are still visible in the form of Mueang Kao and Sukhothai Historical Park where many sites are designated UNESCO Heritage Sites.
Historical significance aside, Sukhothai is also known for its kway tiao Sukhothai served in a slightly sweet broth, and the khao soi, a Northern Thai sausage served with spicy green chilli.
